Carol Smyth

I am a BABCP accredited CBT therapist.  I work with adults at all stages of life, supporting people through anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, and the emotional and psychological impact of all major life transitions. I have a particular specialism in perinatal mental health and a background in supporting infant feeding and unsettled babies.

My work is grounded, thoughtful, non-judgemental and collaborative. I am to offer a space that feels safe, calm and containing - somewhere you can slow things down, make sense of what's happening  and find ways forward that feel manageable and authentic.

How I came to this work.

My professional background in support and therapy began in infant feeding and postnatal support. Over many years I worked closely with parents during early parenthood, often supporting new parents at times of intense stress, exhaustion and vulnerability.

Through this work, it became increasingly clear to me how deeply early parenting experiences - particularly when babies are unsettled or feeding is difficulty - can affect mental health. Anxiety, low mood, loss of confidence and a sense of loss of identity are common, and they deserve careful, compassionate psychological and practical support. I also saw first hand how many people struggle with their birth experience or experienced trauma while giving birth.

This understanding led me to train as a psychotherapist, allowing me to work more directly with the emotional and psychological aspects of these experiences, as well as with adults whose difficulties are not connected to the perinatal period.

My current focus

Today, my primary focus is adult psychotherapy, using CBT as the foundation of my work. I support adults with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, burnout, low mood and life transitions.

Alongside this, I continue to specialise in the perinatal period. This includes working with individuals during pregnancy and in early parenthood - particularly where there are challenges with very unsettled babies, reflux or feeding difficulties as these tend to create a significant emotional impact for the family.

How I work

My approach is thoughtful, collaborative and respectful of your pace. CBT provides a clear and practical framework, helping us to explore how thoughts, emotions and patterns of behaviour interact, while also making space for your lived experience and personal context.

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Therapy with me is about working together to understand what's going on for you and finding ways to support change that feels realistic and sustainable.

I believe in meeting people where they are. If that sounds like a good fit for you, get in touch.

I look forward to meeting you,

Carol
